Eagle’s Eye View
There’s something timeless about a train ride. While cars speed past and planes soar overhead, trains invite you to slow down and enjoy the journey—just like Grant County is all about taking the scenic route and breathing in the fresh mountain air. Combine the two, and you’ve got some great summer plans.

Spread Your Wings
The South Branch Valley Railroad winds through Hampshire, Hardy, and Grant counties, following the curves of its namesake river—and it features a history just as winding. Along its rails rumbles a blue and gold train full of passengers relaxing and appreciating the view. It’s a view you won’t want to miss—in addition to the Potomac River’s rushing waters, the train’s path provides a one-of-a-kind journey through the mountains. Soon enough, your camera roll will be filled with rocky cliffs, serene farmland, and wooded hillsides.
The scenery isn’t the only thing worth capturing. The Potomac Eagle is known for its wildlife encounters—specifically its other namesake, the bald eagle. Although spotting this American icon isn’t guaranteed, the canyon’s ridges are a popular nesting spot for the emblematic bird. Most passengers get the chance to glimpse at least one bald eagle, if not several. Whether you’re planning a romantic evening, a family outing, or a lesson in Appalachian history and wildlife, the Potomac Eagle has a seat saved just for you.
Make a Day of It
When that engine comes a-rumbling through Petersburg, the town opens its doors wide. The Potomac Eagle offers a few adventures: choose from the classic daytime or sunset trip through Trough Canyon or the Green Spring Special—or make a day of it with the All Day Petersburg escapade on August 30, 2025. The 76-mile journey features Trough Canyon views before a 3-hour layover in historic Petersburg, a pinnacle of small-town Appalachia.
The locals know how to celebrate—during your layover, enjoy Train Day in Petersburg. It’s just enough time to sample local favorites like Crown Spirits, which will offer moonshine tasting from noon to 3 p.m., or the historic South Side Depot, where you can find wine tasting and live music from noon to 3:30 p.m. Train Day is an unforgettable day of sipping, listening, and enjoying the company of friends and family.
From Canyon to Caverns
If you’re well-acquainted with Petersburg’s shops and eats, take another scenic route during your layover. The Canyon to Caverns event provides a one-of-a-kind adventure to Smoke Hole Caverns, an ancient geological formation in the Spruce Knob–Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. Learn about local lore and cave science while you explore the depths of the earth.
Riding a historic railroad amongst the mountains, exploring a quaint Appalachian town, and touring crystal-lined caverns dating back millions of years sounds like an impossibly varied itinerary. But in Grant County, this daydream comes to life—so hop on and enjoy the ride.
