Good Old-Fashioned Summer Fun
If you’re looking to experience an authentic Appalachian summer, head to Grant County, where mountain views meet countryside tradition. From fresh-picked produce to fairground thrills, summer here is all about savoring simple pleasures—and making plenty of memories along the way.
At the Market
Is there a better way to start your day than shopping for some of the freshest fruits and vegetables in the Potomac Highlands? Grab your calendar and clear your Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon—you’ll be busy browsing the Grant County WV Farmers Market. From May through October, you’ll find dozens of vendors set up in the Petersburg Municipal Parking Lot.
Whether you’re after baked goods, farm-fresh eggs, artisanal crafts, a hand-made bouquet for your honey, or even honey for your honey, you’ll find it at the farmers market. You won’t only find tasty treats and ingredients for your next homemade meal—you’ll leave with newfound connections and a greater sense of community.
On the Farm
After the market, get to know the farmers behind the goods. You can do that at Eagleview Lavender Farm, where visitors have been picking purple posies since 2018. Once you’ve explored the fragrant fields, stop by the gift shop for handcrafted lavender goodies like shortbread cookies and pancake mix.
Enjoy sunny days and summertime blooms, then make plans for more pick-your-own adventures. You can visit Cherry Brook Farm in the fall for pumpkins, mums, and sunflowers, then head to May Tree Farm during the holidays for the perfect Christmas tree or festive wreath.
At the Fair
It wouldn’t be summer in Grant County without the Tri-County Fair! As one of the oldest county fairs in West Virginia, this weeklong tradition has mastered the art of good old-fashioned family fun. From July 26 to August 2 this year, the fairgrounds in Petersburg will come alive with everything you love about summer nights in the mountains.
Tradition runs deep in the fair’s 105th year. Cheer on the hardworking kiddos of 4-H and FFA as they showcase their animals, then explore exhibit buildings bursting with homemade quilts, homegrown produce, and Granny’s world-famous prize-winning pie.
Entertainment is anything but lacking. Live music—including national sensation Tusk: The Classic Fleetwood Mac Tribute—keeps the energy high, while carnival rides and a Renegade Monster Trucks show offer something for the thrill seekers. Don’t forget to indulge in fair foods while you’re there—there’s plenty of funnel cake to go around.
However you like to spend the season, you’re sure to find your picture-perfect summer day right here in Grant County.
