Make Your Day with Maple Days
Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
Do the late-winter blues have you fighting a case of cabin fever? Look no further than Petersburg for the cure. February brings one of the sweetest traditions of the season to Grant County: Mountain State Maple Days.
There’s no better way to lift your spirits than celebrating this statewide tradition spotlighting West Virginia’s maple industry. You won’t find a more flavorful reason to get some fresh air and treat your taste buds while you’re at it.
From Tree to Table
Mongold Walnut Farm is a must-stop during Maple Days. With 12 acres containing around 1,400 walnut trees, it’s the state’s largest walnut syrup producer. Unlike maple syrup, the rich taste of walnut syrup offers nutty notes with a hint of butterscotch. If you associate black walnuts with bitterness, abandon that notion—this syrup is just the right amount of sweet. Learn exactly what goes into making this Appalachian delicacy and what separates it from maple syrup during a tour of Mongold Walnut Farm between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on February 21.
Maple on the Menu
Grant County’s restaurants and bakeries are getting in on the fun with special maple-inspired offerings. For sweetness, stop at The Station Cafe, known for its from-scratch baked goods and comforting lunch specials. In celebration of Maple Days, you’ll find an unforgettable Maple Bacon Cinnamon Roll available for Maple Days.
Or over at The Grove Cafe and Bakery, warm your hands and your heart with the Taste of WV Maple Latte, paired with maple scones homemade with maple syrup from M&S Maple Farm. There’s truly no better pairing for a slow winter morning during the season of love.
One night only, on February 21 from 4 to 6 p.m., the Landes Ruritan hosts a classic Pancake and Buckwheat Cake Dinner. The menu includes pancakes, buckwheat cakes, sausage, biscuits, and gravy—classic, hearty Appalachian comfort food.
If savory is more your style, The Twisted Pig is serving up maple-glazed ribs alongside its regular menu of barbecue and Cajun cuisine. Keep an eye out for dining specials at Cheetah B’s, too.
Bring Home the Highlands
If you can’t get enough sweetness, take some home with you. Round out your Maple Days adventure with a stop at the South Side Depot Visitor Center and Gift Shop, where you’ll find locally made maple syrup and maple products. For even more options, visit the Smoke Hole Resort Gift Shop, the largest gift shop in West Virginia, featuring maple syrup, West Virginia food products, souvenirs, home decor, and more.
