North Fork South Branch Potomac River (Grant and Pendleton Counties)

Access for wading. Kayaking, canoeing in higher water. Smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, channel catfish, rock bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, golden trout, and occasional tiger trout.

Stocked from Judy Gap downstream to ½ mile above the junction of the South Branch, in Cabins (across from Corners Rd) WV Rt. 28 parallels the stream.

Stocked once in January, twice in February, and weekly March through May; Stocked twice in October.

Excellent wading water, numerous pullouts line the road and parking is abundant along roadside.

 

South Branch Potomac River – City of Petersburg

Canoe and kayak access, wading, boat trailer parking. Outstanding Smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, channel catfish, rock bass, and occasional brown trout, rainbow trout, or golden trout.

Public access just east of South Main St in Petersburg, behind Carquest Auto Parts. Access for wading, kayaking, canoeing,

South Branch Potomac River-Smoke Hole Section

Access for wading. Kayaking canoeing in higher water. Smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, brown trout, rainbow trout, golden trout, and occasional tiger trout.

Stocked from U.S. Rt. 220 Bridge downstream to the Big Bend Recreation Area. The Smoke Hole section can be reached by U. S. Forest Service Rt. 74 or WV Secondary Rt. 2.  parallels the stream.

Stocked once in January, twice in February, and weekly March through May; Stocked twice in October.

 

North Fork of Lunice Creek

Stocked from 1/2 mile below Maysville at Turner Park upstream through Cosner Gap to the intersection of WV Secondary Rt. 28/7. WV Rt. 42 crosses the stream several times providing access along this stream. 

Stocked with trout twice a month February through April and once in May.

South Branch Potomac River – Welton Park

Canoe and kayak access, wading, boat trailer parking, Smallmouth bass, fallfish, sunfish, channel catfish, rock bass, and occasional brown trout, rainbow trout, or golden trout

Public Access on Rt 55, two miles east of Petersburg near Grant and Hardy County border.

 

North Fork of Patterson Creek

Stocked from WV. Secondary Route 3. Bridge upstream through Greenland Gap to Scherr.

Stocked with trout once in January, twice in February, and weekly March through May

South Mill Creek Lake

48-acre lake. WV Rt 9, 7.7 miles south of Dorcas WV, and is accessible from WV Rt. 9. It offers public boat ramp, electric motors only, wheelchair accessible, toilets, and picnic tables.

Excellent fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie and blue gill. The lake receives bi-weekly trout stockings from March through May. Night fishing is allowed. No live minnows.

Mt. Storm Lake

1,200-acre lake, accessible from WV 93. Public boat ramp near dam, largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, blue gill, hybrid striped bass and walleye. During May, black bass fishing tournament open to the public.

Unlimited horse power, lake contains no wake, speed zones, and/or other restricted areas. Live minnows may be used as bait and night fishing is allowed.

New Creek Dam

40 acre lake owned by Natural Resources Conservation Service, located in Grant County off WV Route 93, about 9 miles south of New Creek and 6 miles north of Scherr.

Channel catfish, large and small mouth bass, red breast sunfish, trout. No boating or camping allowed. Night fishing is allowed. No live minnows.

 

Catch & Release Locations

North Fork of South Branch

A 3/4-mile section at the mouth of Seneca Creek, near Seneca Rocks Visitor Center. Access is by WV Secondary Rt. 28/3 at the junctions of U.S. Rt. 28 and 33 at Mouth of Seneca.

(Fish-for-Fun) Rainbow, brown, golden, brook trout, small mouth bass and fall fish.

South Branch

Stocked with trout from Eagle Rock. Downstream in a 1-mile section, located 2 miles below U.S. Rt. 220 via WV Secondary Rt. 2, within the Smoke Hole Section.
